MUEHLEDER
——————-
Intern in Production / Fashion Design
June 2022- August 2022
Location
New York, New York
Muehleder is a ready-to-wear company where all the garments are designed and constructed in New York City. Throughout the summer, I worked one on one with designer Larissa Muehleder to design new pieces, construct samples, negotiate manufacturing terms, source materials, plan ad campaigns, speak with customers, pack orders and much more. The team was small, just Larissa, one other intern, and I, so the days were packed as we scrambled to keep up with this rapidly growing industry.
Working in fashion design in New York City was truly an eye-opening experience. I made connections and friendships that I never dreamed were possible and gained intense industry experience in just a matter of months. On my very first day of work, I was taken to the garment district and asked to find a new factory for Muehleder to work with. I was sent alone, with no instructions as to where or who to start with. I was told, “pick a building, any building, and come back when you found someone to produce our clothes”. I spent the next few hours riding elevators up and down various buildings I had never been in before, speaking to dozens of people about a company I had just joined that day. I was terrified but also incredibly excited. Larissa had trusted me to find the factory for the entire company to use. And I found one. This trust continued to grow throughout the summer as I worked side by side with Larissa to construct pieces for Camila Cabello, Lupita Nyong'o, Angela Simmons and so many more. I got to design garments for a new fall line and learned the intricacies of style forecasting and marketing. I even became a regular blogger for Muehleder, updating the Mue Blog weekly with new style tips and tricks.
This internship was truly transformative for my career. I always dreamed of working in fashion but feared that because I was not at a design school I would never be able to make it. This summer reignited that dream in my heart and gave me confidence in my abilities. I left this internship with connections and skills that will take me far if I continue to push myself.
